5th Grade Units of Study

Montrose uses the units of study from the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Program (TCRWP).  We have found this workshop model helps our students grow as readers and writers.  We will explore reading topics in realistic fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, opinion, and historical fiction.  We will write personal narratives, nonfiction research projects, memoir, fantasy, and persuasive pieces.

In math, we are using Number Talks, My Math, Rich Problems and other activities to grow mathematicians.  Units of Study include multiplication review, division, and lots of fractions.

In Science and Social Studies, students experience hands-on activities designed to guide them in discovering new ideas.  Our social studies units include Early Explorers, Ancient Civilizations, Native Americans, and Economics.  Our science units include Force and Motion, Solar System, Light and Sound, and Scientific Inquiry and Processes.

About the Teachers

Mrs. Addington will be teaching math, science, and social studies.  She also enjoys reading books and talking about them with students.  Her favorite book series is Harry Potter.  She also enjoys reading anything Mrs. Williams reads because she makes good book suggestions!

Mrs. Williams will be teaching language arts - including reading, writing, and word study.  She loves to read and talk about books with kids.  Some of her favorite books include:  The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu, and anything written by Kate DiCamillo.
