 7th Grade World History

This course is a survey of the history of the world and its societies from 750 B.C. to 1600 A.D.: from Ancient Greece to the First Global Age. Our studies will highlight how historic and current events are shaped by geographic, social, cultural, economic and political factors.

You will develop an understanding of how ideas and events from the past have shaped the world today. Areas and cultures covered include Europe, the Middle East, Africa, China and Japan.

The texts used in this class are Glencoe’s World History Journey Across Time: The Early Ages and History Alive: The Medieval World and Beyond from Teachers’ Curriculum Institute. Chapters 1-8, and parts of 9 & 10 of Journey Across Time are used by the sixth-grade classes of Bexley, while this course will use chapters 9, 10, & 11-18. We will also use other supplemental materials, both document and web based. This class follows all State of Ohio and International Baccalaureate (IB) guidelines for study.

You can be trusted to…

 

  1. Be on time! Be in your assigned seats by the time the bell rings.
  2. Bring the following to class each day:

-Assignment notebook

-Pen, pencil and lined, loose leaf paper

-Completed homework, as necessary

-3 ring binder, you may use a section in a larger binder labeled SS

  1. Be attentive and quiet at the start of class, and copy down your assignment.

 

 

Standards-Based Grading:

 

In this course, a non-traditional, standards-based grading system is used. Rather than using a point system to record scores on various assignments, quizzes and tests, you must demonstrate your level of proficiency on various learning targets related to the Ohio state standards for social studies grade 7. For example, instead of getting one letter grade for a quiz that may cover many topics, you will be scored on individual learning goals such as, “I can identify historical practices in Ancient Greece and Italy that influenced the rights U.S. citizens have today.”

 

 

Rubrics that list the learning targets to be demonstrated in the completion of a project, test or quiz, etc. will be provided to you and used for assessment. Grades will be assigned based on descriptors of achievement only. Grades will not be affected by issues such as lateness of work, effort, attitude, participation, and attendance. Those factors will be reported separately.

 

For each learning target or standard, you will be scored using the following scale:

 

Mastery

Student consistently and independently demonstrates the specified knowledge and skills.

Approaching Mastery

Student inconsistently or with limited support demonstrates the specified knowledge and skills.

Needs Support

Student needs ongoing support to demonstrate the specified knowledge and skills.

Insufficient Evidence

Student has not yet provided enough information for the teacher to determine what the student can do.

 

 

Additionally:

  1. All assignments must be turned in on time.
  2. Homework assignments and projects are due at the beginning of class or will be considered late. You will have temporarily earned an incomplete/insufficient evidence in PowerSchool. You have the opportunity to turn in the assignment/project or complete an alternative assessment to demonstrate proficiency during Study Hall or attend Study Tables after school.
  3. You will have the opportunity to receive re-teaching and re-assessment to demonstrate proficiency on an assessment of learning targets. The times that these will occur will be announced in class following each assessment or you may arrange to work with me in a timely manner.
  4. If absent, it is your responsibility to see me regarding what you missed. You have the same amount of school days as the number of days you were absent to hand in make-up work.  
  5. Please check PowerSchool regularly for updated learning progress reports.

You will need the following…

   -Assignment notebook

   -3 ring binder for notes and journaling

   -loose-leaf paper for homework

   -pens and pencils

       -markers or colored pencils (some days)

 

 

Extra Help: In addition to the Study Hall period, I will be available after school by appointment.
