COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Learning a foreign language is a wonderful journey to gaining new communication skills, exploring communities and cultures other than your own, and reaching a deeper understanding of your native language. We will study how the French language works, how to use it, and the cultures where it is spoken. We will start with basic elements and continue to build on top of them.

WHAT DOES M. MAIER EXPECT FROM ME?
1. Respect: Show that you RESPECT the dignity and property of others.
2. Character: Behave in a way that shows good character.
3. Active Participation: Participate and come prepared EVERYDAY!

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM M. MAIER?
I will always do my best to:
1. Treat every member of the class with respect and dignity.
2. Be fair when teaching and grading.
3. Be prepared for class everyday (just like I expect you to be)*
4. Give assignments that meet all students' learning styles.
5. Be prompt in grading and returning assignments.
6. Always be clear with what I expect and how assignments/ assessments are set up.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FOLLOWING CIRCUMSTANCES?
Unfortunately, sometimes people don’t always act respectful or show good character in class. This is a natural fact of life. When this happens, there are consequences:
Level 1 – Warning.
Level 2 – Communication with guardian(s).
Level 3 – 30 minute lunch detention & phone call home
Level 4 – Removal from class.

If you are always showing RESPECT, GOOD CHARACTER, and being an ACTIVE PARTICIPANT, then you don’t have to worry about consequences.

WHAT KINDS OF ASSIGNMENTS/ACTIVITIES CAN I EXPECT?

When you learn another language you have to learn to READ, WRITE, SPEAK, and LISTEN in that language. You also learn about the CULTURES in the areas where the language is spoken. It's a huge task for both the student and the instructor to make sure you're getting practice in all those areas. In order to meet those goals, you have to learn VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR, PRONUNCIATION, and COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
You will have a variety of assignments to help you learn. Some of them you might not like, some of them you might love, but regardless of what you think about them, they all have a specific educational goal.

HOW DOES M. MAIER GRADE?

I use a weighted scale. Summative assessments are the big assessments and the opportunities for you to show me what you have truly learned and are able to do in French. Formative assessments are smaller and show me how you are developing in the language. Homework is based on you putting forth a strong effort to practice concepts that we are working on in class and correcting any mistakes you may have made.
85%: Assessments (Summative & Formative)
15%: Homework & Class Preparedness

WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM ABSENT?

If you are absent, email Mr. Maier to find out what you missed. I will put make-up assignments on Canvas, but it is YOUR responsibility to pick them up. IF you miss a quiz/test, etc., schedule a make-up appointment with Mr. Maier. It is your responsibility to complete any missing assignments.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED HELP?

My job and passion is to help you learn French. If you don't understand something or feel like you need some extra help (or if you just want to practice), see me right away and I will help you.

ALWAYS TRY TO SPEAK FRENCH FIRST...REMEMBER YOU'LL MAKE MISTAKES...(you make mistakes in English, right?)

AMUSEZ-VOUS DANS LA CLASSE DE FRANÇAIS!
