What to Expect from Spanish

  • Classes in grades 1-6 receive instruction in the Spanish language and culture for 35 minutes, once per week.
  • Elementary Spanish in the Bexley City School District is designed as a FLEX program, which means that is foreign language experience or exploration.
  • The goals of a FLEX program are to:
    • Capture the optimal time in a child's life for learning and appreciating another language.
    • Learn basic foreign language vocabulary and phrases.
    • Increase awareness of language
    • Create enthusiasm for future language study
    • Gain an understanding and knowledge of other cultures and countries.
  • Children are introduced to a language through stories, games, interactive instruction, cultural activities, and lots of music!
  • Students learn about geography and find out where Spanish is spoken in relation to where we live. This aids in making connections across other content areas in their home classroom!
  • Emphasis is on listening and speaking, with attention to reading and writing words and sentences in grades 4-6. This is developmentally appropriate for students at this level and for an exploratory language program.
  • Students in sixth grade will receive a mark of "Satisfactory" or "Needs Improvement” on their grade card. A mark of "Satisfactory" may be achieved through participation, completion of in class assignments, and assessment for understanding.
  • At this level of instruction, it is important to be aware that students will exit the program with knowledge of basic vocabulary words and culture as it relates to the Spanish speaking world.
  • Language proficiency is a skill that is built over time and frequent contact with the target language. Students in grades 1-6 are provided with foundation for learning about languages, as well as appreciation for diverse cultures.
  • Students have opportunities to use Spanish outside of class and share what they are learning.
    • Please visit www.quia.com/profiles/kk369 for games, activities and songs related to our Spanish class.
    • Songs we use are listed under "links."
